HORSE

The horse family is at least 45 to 55 million years old. They started with small, multi-toed animals and evolved to the present-day large, single-toed animals. Horses have been domesticated from 4,000 BC.

The horse's anatomy is evolved to help them evade predators. The horse has a very well developed sense of balance, and a strong 'fight-or-flight' instinct.

The horse has some unusual features. The horse has the largest eyes of any modern-day land mammal. Also, a horse can sleep while standing upright.

There are over 300 breeds of horse. The average lifespan is 25 to 30 years.
