A haunted house is a house or other building often perceived as being inhabited by disembodied spirits of the deceased. The deceased may have been former residents, may have died a tragic death nearby, or may have been buried at or near the location of the supposed haunting. Parapsychologists frequently attribute haunting to the occurrence of a sudden, violent or tragic death.
Doubters point out that older houses can give the perception of being haunted, due to naturally occurring sounds in older structures due to nothing but age. They also point out that there are many other reasons why people's perceptions may be altered, such as suggestibility, waking dreams, drug effects, or toxic substances that may cause hallucinations.
Haunted houses, or perceived haunted houses, are thought to exist worldwide, and belief in them is universal to almost every culture. A list of reportedly haunted locations is available here.
