The DMC DeLorean is a sports car manufactured by the DeLorean Motor Company for the American market from 1981 to 1983. The car was known for its gull wing doors and brushed stainless steel body. About 9,000 DeLoreans were made before production halted in late December 1982 shortly after the company filed for bankruptcy. The DeLorean continues to have a cult following and about 6,500 DeLoreans are still on the road. It is memorable for its appearances as the time machine in the movie Back to the Future.
The DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) was founded by John Zachary DeLorean (1925 – 2005), an American engineer, inventor, and executive in the U.S. automobile industry, widely known for his work at General Motors. He is credited with creating the first "muscle car", the Pontiac G.T.O. He finally spent 10 years in prison for sale of cocaine and fraud.
